An international cooperation to reduce atmospheric emissions from livestock buildings has started under the framework of EU COST actions. The project is COST Action CA16106 “LivAGE: Ammonia and Greenhouse Gases Emissions from Animal Production Buildings”, which started on May 2017 and will last for four years. On 28th and 29th September 2017 a project meeting was held in Bucharest (Romania) to start the project activities.
The main objective of LivAGE is to enhance international multidisciplinary cooperation for exchanging ideas and knowledge, sharing good practices and assessing innovative technologies to reduce greenhouse gases and ammonia from livestock buildings. LivAGE includes most EU expertise in this topic, and aims to contribute to a more environmental friendly and sustainable livestock production.
Despite very important advances in the last years, measuring atmospheric emissions from livestock houses and mitigating them effectively are still challenging tasks for scientists, farmers and the whole society. LivAGE will contribute to some of these challenges: harmonizing measurement protocols, measuring emissions from naturally ventilated buildings more accurately, developing effective mitigation strategies suitable for the heterogeneous livestock production systems in Europe, and involving industry more effectively. Also, relevant contributions are expected from LivAGE to other related challenges such as animal welfare, antimicrobial reduction or adaptation to climate change (particularly in hot climates).
The LivAGE Project is structured in the following working groups: WG1 – improve emission measurement techniques; WG2 – develop emission models to analyze potential mitigation strategies; WG3 – conduct the environmental assessment of housing systems and emission abatement techniques; and WG4- disseminating the information and involving the most relevant stakeholders.
